Two-time Grammy-nominated R&B sensation Amerie has officially returned to the booth to deliver a fresh take on her most recognizable hit. Teaming up with platinum-certified Philadelphia rapper 2Rare, Amerie provides all-new vocals for “BussDown (1 Thing),” an infectious modern reimagining of her iconic 2005 smash, available now across all streaming platforms.
Produced by multi-platinum hitmaker Hitmaka, the new single bridges eras by layering 2Rare’s melodic trap and drill soundscape over the unmistakable groove of Amerie’s original record. Rather than simply clearing a sample, Amerie actively collaborated with the rising rapper, laying down brand-new vocals that elevate the track and bring a revitalized energy to a familiar, legendary sound.
The collaboration highlights Amerie’s continued willingness to champion younger artists and embrace the evolution of contemporary music.
“‘1 Thing’ has always been such a special song to me, and I love seeing it continue to connect with new listeners,” Amerie shared regarding the release. “Working with 2Rare on this record brought a fresh energy to the song while still honoring what made the original so timeless. I’m excited for people to hear what we created together and to experience ‘1 Thing’ in a whole new way.”
Anticipation for the track reached a fever pitch last month after Amerie, 2Rare, and Hitmaka shared a series of behind-the-scenes teasers via Instagram. The in-studio footage sparked a viral reaction across social media, with fans widely praising the unexpected pairing and Amerie’s flawless vocal return.
For 2Rare, a 2023 XXL Freshman known for his deft ability to flip 2000s samples, securing a direct collaboration with the original architect of the hit represents a profound career milestone.
“It’s really a full circle moment. ‘1 Thing’ came out when I was five years old, and I grew up hearing Amerie through my mom,” 2Rare explained. “Now she’s putting new vocals on my version of the record. She keeps thanking me for bringing new life to it, but I’m the one thanking her for giving me that blessing. It feels like two generations meeting at the perfect time.”
The release marks a significant reintroduction for the young rapper, who has spent the last few years building a reputation for infectious melodies alongside heavyweights like Lil Durk and NLE Choppa. By sharing the track with an R&B heavyweight, he effectively bridges nostalgic soul with contemporary club energy.
