MORE ROMANCE…

altOn the again finish of final 12 months the subtle soul crowd had been thrilled with a brand new EP from easy soul maestro WILL DOWNING. ‘Romantique half 1’ supplied Will’s distinctive tackle a clutch of soul and jazz requirements like Dionne Warwick’s Isaac Hayes penned ‘Déjà Vu’ and Lou Rawls’ ‘You will By no means Discover One other Love like Mine’ alongside his personal ‘If She Knew’. The tag line “half 1” indicated there was extra to return – and , lo and behold, right here it’s ‘Romantique half 2’… a 6 tracker that, like episode 1, mixes the well-known with some Downing originals.

Of the well-known, the chief focus is a therapy of Tony Joe White’s ‘Wet Evening In Georgia’. I’ve misplaced depend of what number of variations there are of this, however Will’s new look comes near matching the melancholy great thing about Brook Benton’s basic studying … there’s even a mournful harmonica in there!

The 2 different cuts that completely match the ‘Romantique’ billing are Will’s variations of Larry Graham’s ‘One In A Million’ and Jon Lucien’s ‘Girl Love’. Elsewhere, there is a strutting model of Barry White’s ‘Ecstasy’ (not fairly Quiet Strom) and a crisp beating ‘Shut To You’ and a catchy ‘Prepared, Prepared And Ready’ which was the EP heralding single.
