After hitting restart on her career, the Scottish singer returns with a timeless-sounding debut album on her own terms
British soul is in a golden era. Last year, singer Olivia Dean’s classic 1960s-influenced sounds produced a sold-out UK tour and triumphal Glastonbury performance, while Michael Kiwanuka’s third album, Small Changes, was a late contender for record of the year thanks to its intimate introspection and whispered melodies. Now Scotland’s Brooke Combe seems set to carry the mantle of homegrown soul with the release of her remarkably confident debut album, Dancing at the Edge of the World.
The Midlothian singer-songwriter first came to prominence with her glossy 2021 debut single, Are You With Me?, a singalong, radio-friendly track with a hand-clapping chorus. Swiftly signed, Combe began writingher debut album, but came unstuck when faced by the commercial constraints of a major label. She dropped out of her contract and linked up instead with producer and frontman of the Coral, James Skelly.
