In December UK blue-eyed soulstress JO HARMAN introduced an upcoming EP…. ‘Signature Soul’. The announcement got here by way of the discharge of the only ‘Loving Arms’. Written by Tom Jans, the track has been recorded numerous occasions – maybe most famously by Dobie Grey; (try variations by Billy Eckstine, Mille Jackson and Bo Kirkland and Ruth Davis too). Ms Harman’s model was as “genuine” as any of these and it augured effectively for the father or mother EP.
We have been advised that the EP will hit the gross sales racks on 4th March and previews reside as much as the promise that ‘Loving Arms’ delivered. The general temper of the 5 tracker is the wistful, nation soul of ‘Loving Arms’. In some ways it jogs my memory of Joss Stone’s debut the place southern soul heroine Betty Wright introduced soul authenticity to the music of the younger Devonian.
‘Loving Arms’ is one in all two covers on the mini album. The opposite is, perhaps surprisingly, a tackle the Beatles’ ‘Do not Let Me Down’. Ms H does not’ stray too removed from the unique, however vocally is perhaps extra pleading and helpless than John Lennon’s tough and raucous assault. The remaining three songs are ‘Say That You Need Me’, ‘The Angel Leaves Her Watermark’ and ‘Preserve You Guessing’. All three (certainly the entire EP) might’ve been crafted in Memphis, Miami or Muscle Shoals. The key? Nicely , first off – Ms Harman’s innate grasp of the style and, second – the entire EP was recorded as an unedited “reside” set with backing courtesy of Redtenbacher’s Funkestra. There is no “fixing” and separation between the gamers and singer. ‘Signature Soul’ certainly!
